China Telecom NarrowEnlarge
Background
China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom) was a giant state-owned telecom operator. In 2002, China Telecom accomplished an overall restructuration of its assets and completed a successful IPO.
With 21 province-level affiliates, it has 70% market share of the national long-distance telecommunication network, with authority to build local telecom network and operate local fixed telephone lines among ten provinces in north China.
Challenges
China Telecom is among the top 500 most profitable corporations in the world. With 21 provinces, building a coherent identity between all affiliates, services and sub-brands was the most difficult part of this project. A deep understanding of the industry was necessary before starting to develop the brand image.
Solution
We spent nearly a year to complete the master design of the logo, visual elements and visual applications. Between 2002 and 2003 we created the VI guidelines and officially introduced the new logo the following year with a comprehensive promotion of the entire VI. After the adoption of a new brand image and through systematic developments, the brand recognition and market share raised simultaneously by 30.7%. An excellent performance by any standard.
logo\'s meaning
The entire design is classic and concise, static and dynamic, with fluid lines and visual rhythm.
The design revolve (litteraly) around the letter C as the main compositional element. Two Cs are intertwine and interact with each other in a lively way , forming the abbreviation of China Telecom while generating the Chinese character of ‘中’ which mean "center" and is the first character for the country name "China".
Both "Cs" represent, dynamically the longitude and latitude of earth, a network linking every corner of the world. The letter C is also the capital letter for “clients, corporate, cooperation, and competition” which led to the corporate concept: “clients is the first, service is first”.
The logo look and feel is high-tech, innovative with progressive corporate blue. The 3 dimensional typeface is spectacular but also friendly, forming a positive contrast between classic and modern.
